Arriving in Paris

Today after arriving in Paris I was taken by train to the Imprimerie Nationale. There I met with Nelly Gable and we consulted on what tools are necessary for punchcutting. Being awake for almost 24 hours my French was not so great, but I am getting through.

We talked about the Impremerie Nationale being in a delicate state of flux and how the government is not sure that it offers any benefit to its people. I feel strongly that it is of supreme importance to the culture of mankind, a treasure that has survived world wars … but now because of economic challenges, is in danger of being lost to all time as a living craft.

I feel somewhat like Joan d’Arc with a mission to save this world of metal types and punchcutting for our future generations of young people and people of all ages who benefit from beauty in the world. The world of typography affects everything in a very subtle way and touches our hearts through everything we read daily, and the roots need to be preserved.
