Introduction from Nelly Gable
So much emotion in front of Dan Carr’s workbench, this friend, this poet who engraved his own Regulus and Parmenides fonts in steel. His files, his graveurs, a candle, his smoke proofs, some strange tools, steel bars still wandering on the wood, the steel filings showing us his last gesture. He left us on an ordinary evening and never came back. But his tools were waiting for him to finish this smoke proof of a number 2 which was misplaced, this sketch bar of the 6, those of 0 and 1 already drawn on the steel, this smoke proof of the 4, still in its smoke proof holder. Those steel bars of the 3, 5, and 7, which are waiting, patiently, in a wood galley.
Dan, out of respect for this passion of engraving which always drove you, we have to carry on this activity in Ashuelot. Do we have your consent? Because two women work currently from morning till evening at your workbench with words such as sharpening, talus …
Be happy Dan, of such a ferment, such a effervescence insures the preservation of your work!

Historians, don’t worry, nothing was misplaced in this catastrophic “boite a oubli” (box of forgetting) called a dustbin.
All the pictures which you may need have been taken, all the documents have been protected. Be mindful that this knowledge should be continued and made durable, taught to generations to come!

Que d’émotions devant l’établi de Dan Carr, cet ami, ce poète qui a gravé ses propres caractères Regulus et Parmenides.
Ses limes, ses échoppes, une bougie, ses épreuves de fumés, des outils étranges, des barreaux d’acier vagabondent sur le bois, la limaille d’acier nous montrant son dernier geste.
Il est parti un soir ordinaire et il n’est jamais revenu. Mais son outillage l’attendait pour finir ce fumé du 2 qui s’était égaré, ce barreau du 6 en ébauche, ceux du 0 et du 1 déjà tracés sur l’acier, ce fumé du 4 toujours dans le fumigraphe ou encore ces barreaux du 3, 5 et 7 qui attendent, patiemment, dans une galée en bois.
> Dan, par respect pour cette passion de la gravure qui t’a toujours animée, nous nous devons de perpétuer cette activité à Ashuelot.
Avons nous ton accord ? Car deux femmes travaillent actuellement du matin jusqu’au soir derrière ton établi avec des mots tels qu’affûtage, talus…
Sois heureux Dan, une telle effervescence assure la pérennité de ton geste.

Historiens, n’ayez point d’inquiétude, rien n’a été mis dans cette “boite à oubli” catastrophique appelée poubelle.
Toutes les photographies qui vous seront nécessaires ont été prises, tous les documents ont été préservés. Soyez cependant conscients que ce savoir-faire doit être pérennisé !
