I’m working on sewing books today for The Reach of the Heart. All of the art is unique to each book, so each of the three monoprints in each book is different and in addition, each set is completely different. I also cut the boards today, on the board cutter out in the distant space in the shop, in preparation for making the case for the book. To cover the boards I will eventually use my painted paste papers, which I have been making since 1989. I started making painted paste papers in this unique way, because I was coming in as a binder, but was primarily an abstract artist, working on books with my partner Dan Carr. The first unique paste paper painting I made for a book cover was in 1989 for the New England branch of the Guild of Bookworkers catalogue. At that time I had never seen anyone do anything but the traditional style paste papers, and I could not resist changing things up and making an abstract image.
